Celebrating 50 years – and celebrating our youth

10 May: Girls and boys, old boys, staff and supporters all enjoyed our recent 50th anniversary celebration at Girls & Boys Town Magaliesburg. Gum-boot dancing, speeches, sports events and sharing special anecdotes over good food all added to the spirit of celebration. CEO Lee Loynes summed up the organisation’s positive approach by saying: ‘We are determined to continue being a part of the solution.’

Imagine what a kid who has experienced trauma feels like when there’s a power cut. No lights, confusion, fear … it’s a sad fact that some of the youngsters at Girls and Boys Town had bad experiences ‘in the darkness’ before they came to us.

This is why we’re raising funds to buy generators for all Girls and Boys Towns – and why your help is so crucial.

Whether there’s load-shedding in the future or not – we need to equip our children’s centres with back-up power sources – generators – so that we’re prepared … dozens of children count on us. Please support this important initiative.

One of our Grade 7 boys wrote: ‘I am scared to be in the dark because I was hurt in the darkness at home. I like to sleep with my light on.’  Some of our girls expressed similar fears, especially the younger ones.

Power cuts are unsettling for the children – and they disrupt food preparation, homework schedules and important routines.

Any contribution you can make will be a big help – and much appreciated.

Message from our Chief Executive Officer

Healthy
transitions

Girls and Boys Town youth are masters at adapting to different circumstances and environments.

They leave home and enter our programmes for a period of time, make new friends, establish and maintain new relationships, learn healthier ways of interacting and managing personal challenges – and then adapt their skills and strengths to varying situations as they return to their homes and other environments.

This transitional journey is not one they travel alone. Always, they have the support of our trained staff.  And, in addition, the knowledge that people like you have the faith to invest in them. If you would like to invest in another young person, just beginning their journey to responsible adulthood, please click here.

God bless and watch over you in this, our 50th year.
